Skattebol - Soet soos 'n drukkie

Description (View/Hide)
Project Brief
The objective of this brief was to conceptualise a food/beverage truck that caters to a specific local target audience and design a brand identity that spans cohesively across all the relevant visual media. We were challenged to come up with a creative name that relates to the concept, and do it all in a South African language other than English.

Concept and Direction
Skattebol (Afrikaans slang for “darling”) is a food truck offering nostalgic South African dessert flavours, reimagined in the form of mochi and bubble tea. The fusion of South African and Japanese cuisine takes advantage of current Cape Town trends and caters to trend-conscious foodie's of all ages who crave child-hood desserts as a comfort food or sweet treat, as well as tourists seeking an Instagram-worthy, gentle introduction to South African flavours. Skattebol is a unique concept that blends nostalgia and excitement through delicious treats that hit that sweet spot every time.
The name “Skattebol”, being a term of affection, inspired the idea for a South African childhood-dessert theme, and the terms direct translation into 'treasure-ball' could easily be used to describe mochi and bubble tea, both of which are unassuming in appearance but packed with unique and delicious flavours. The slogan “Soet soos ‘n drukkie” translates to “Sweet as a hug”, perfectly conveying the nostalgic, gentle vibe of the brand, allowing you to get back in touch with your inner child.
Various items were developed to support the brand, including communication media, uniform and packaging. The main emphasis was on the food truck itself, that had to embody the playful and nostalgic character of the brand. Stepping into the atmosphere of the brand had to transform the customer into a fantasy break from reality, filled with fun and delight.
