Plates of Joy

Description (View/Hide)
A 100 page recipe book that expresses the stories of the many different contributors in a cohesive design that honours each individual recipe and the stories that are written alongside them. The mix of different tastes and recipes should result in a bespoke recipe book that represents many vibrant cultures and wonderful memories.

The concept of this recipe book centres around plates and how they are an important part of the meal itself, and not only for the presentation of the food. Plates bring back memories, just as meals do, and they can also be an inspiration for dishes – not just something to put the food onto.
The inspiration for the colour scheme comes from my own culture. I am Irish but was born in Eswatini and because my recipe for the book leans more into the Irish half, I wanted Eswatini to feature in other ways. This is why the colour scheme is inspired by softer versions of the flag’s primary colours.
The font and typography style also leans into the concept of the book. By using many different cuts of the same font, from extreme heavy to very light, the typography speaks to the mix of cultures and recipes that make up the book. The bold use of typography is also used to unify and link the pages, to keep a thread running throughout.
This book is filled with very different personal recipes and stories from many cultures, and the one thing that is common across all of them, is that they are all served up on a plate of some kind. I have used a combination of plates specific to the culture, fancy plates, paper plates. I have used food on plates, plates on food, plates without food and circular motifs that reference plates.
