Nelson Mandela Museum - Rebrand: Typography

Description (View/Hide)
Typefaces designed for rebranding of the Mandela Museum in Qunu reimagines the institution’s visual identity to better reflect its role as a living archive of Madiba’s legacy and a catalyst for youth empowerment. Rooted in the spirit of ubuntu and inspired by local craft traditions, the refreshed brand system honours Mandela’s values while creating a warm, modern visual language that resonates with new generations. The rebrand includes a bold new logo, vibrant colour palette, custom iconography, signage, merchandise design, and brand extensions for two new initiatives: Ubrewntu — a community coffee shop, and Madiba Made, a curated curio store supporting local artisans. This project blends respectful heritage with forward-thinking design, reinforcing the museum's role as a space of memory, learning, and connection. The project was executed while interacting with the museum as stakeholders regularly during the duration in order to better understand their needs and core ideals. The logo/display type was designed with five variants, developed from traditional Xhosa design motifs, specifically in beadwork. The secondary script typeface was designed from analysing Mandela's handwriting.
