Cheeseboy

Description (View/Hide)
MTN’s new brand commercial, "Cheeseboy," is a heartfelt tribute to human connection, uniquely capturing a relatable South African narrative. At its core, it is a coming-of-age story centered on Mpho, a boy from the city who returns to his homelands, feeling out of place.

Mpho's journey to find common ground with his cousin Sakhile, who calls him "Cheeseboy"- a slang term for rich kid from the city- highlights the nuances of familial bonds and cultural identity.
Mpho’s ‘Cheeseboy’ status is reinforced by his aspirations of being an influencer, what he wears, how he speaks and the accompaniment of his white best friend from the city, James.

Initially, technology appears as a barrier between the two cousins, symbolizing their different worlds. However, the story beautifully unfolds to reveal technology as a uniting force, bringing the cousins closer.

Launching MTN’s new brand platform, "Today we make moves," this commercial aligns seamlessly with MTN’s mission to empower the nation's progress as South Africa's leading network. It echoes the spirit of innovation, celebrating a nation of move-makers who forge connections and drive progress.

"Cheeseboy" represents a return to the classic storytelling style that made MTN an integral part of South African culture. The narrative is rich with local flavor, encapsulating the essence of community and progress. By blending tradition with modernity, the film creates a powerful message that resonates with the audience’s aspirations and realities.

In an era where technology often feels like a wedge, "Cheeseboy" refreshing reframes it as a bridge - celebrating the power of connectivity that MTN champions. This commercial not only reinforces MTN's brand promise but also revitalizes its legacy as a beacon of authentic storytelling that speaks to the heart of South Africa.
