Taalgenoot is the quarterly magazine and official mouthpiece of the ATKV (Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging). The cover of Taalgenoot’s Autumn 2025 issue features the musician, voice artist, and radio and theatre director, Frieda van den Heever. In the article in the magazine, under the headline “Om diep te skep in bitter seisoene” (“To create/draw deeply in bitter seasons”), Frieda’s comprehensive creative output is inextricably linked to the experiences she has had – also the recent death of her husband.

Photographer André Badenhorst made this philosophy a part of his vision for the cover photo shoot. The jarring sight of a piano, wrecked from having fallen through the ceiling, becomes a beautiful backdrop for Frieda, who even sees a creative opportunity in the dust that sifts down from above.
