Description (View/Hide)
Ikhiwane Elihle Ligcwala Izibungu.
This Zulu proverb has the same meaning as the saying “All that glitters is not gold.” This refers to how things that externally seem attractive or precious is not always that way in their nature, or not a reliable indication of their nature.

A story about a picky Fruit Bat
A story about animals that live in an orchard full of different fruit trees. The fruit bat sets out to look for a perfect fruit for lunch. He goes to each fruit tree and meets one animal at each tree, looking for the best looking fruit. Each animal he meets offers him a fruit from the tree, and he continues to say no and point out why the fruit is not perfect for him and move on to the next tree. He finally goes to the fig tree and spots a green, shiny, perfect looking fig, Excited, he takes it. He settles down to eat his perfect fig, taking a bite. To his horror, he finds worms in the fig and immediately spits it out. A fellow animal notices, and brings up the saying and explains how the fruit bat shouldn’t always believe that the shiniest and most perfect looking fruit is the best.

Our stories should be based on proverbs that we would mainly hear in South Africa, for a closer connection to our home country. For this project, we are tasked to write and illustrate a children’s book that is inspired by childhood proverbs, something that is commonly shared
orally. These books should be suitable to read for children under the age of 6, with engaging, colourful, kid-friendly visuals that fit the narrative.
