Spotify’s growth in South Africa had been strong, but adoption in KwaZulu-Natal—home to one of the country’s largest language and cultural communities—lagged behind. While Zulu music continues to shape South African culture through maskandi, gospel, gqom, hip hop and Afro-pop, Zulu audiences did not yet feel fully represented on the platform.
The challenge was not awareness, but cultural relevance. Spotify needed to move beyond being seen as a global streaming platform and position itself as a true home for Zulu music, identity and pride.
Our insight was simple: Zulu culture is already influencing the world. Spotify simply needed to reflect that truth back to audiences authentically.
Introducing Khuphuka Nathi (“Rise With Us”), an integrated campaign celebrating Zulu sound and inviting audiences everywhere to rise with it. Rather than simply adapting one creative idea across channels, we built a connected cultural ecosystem where every touchpoint played a distinct role in telling the same story.
Our cinematic hero film captured the power, rhythm and pride of Zulu music and culture. Zulu-language radio executions extended the story through sound, embedding the campaign into everyday listening moments across KwaZulu-Natal.
Out-of-home and digital out-of-home placements brought the campaign into public spaces across KZN and major urban centres, celebrating Zulu artists at scale and transforming cultural pride into visibility. On social media, short-form content, behind-the-scenes storytelling and artist-led conversations encouraged audiences to participate, engage and share the movement.
Each channel worked differently, but all reinforced one powerful message: Zulu music belongs everywhere.
Khuphuka Nathi successfully repositioned Spotify as a platform that actively celebrates and elevates Zulu culture. By combining film, radio, OOH, DOOH and social into one cohesive narrative, the campaign created a stronger sense of belonging for Zulu listeners while introducing their music and stories to broader audiences.
Ultimately, Khuphuka Nathi demonstrated the power of truly integrated storytelling.
