Description (View/Hide)
In South Africa, "mother" has never only meant the woman who gave birth to you. It
extends far beyond biology, to the teachers, aunties, grannies, neighbours, and friends who
step in every day to nurture, guide, and protect children. Care is never just one person's
responsibility. It's a village effort, built on small acts of love that add up to growth.
That was the human truth behind A Village of Mothers. We didn't want to simply tell people
it takes a village. We wanted to make them remember theirs.
So we moved away from the polished world of traditional baby formula advertising. Instead
of a perfect version of family life, we created something real and lived-in. The camera stayed
close and handheld, often over the shoulder, as if we had simply walked into the room and
were witnessing these moments for ourselves, standing beside these women rather than
watching them from a distance.
There is a nostalgia to the film, but not for a decade or an aesthetic. It's nostalgia for a
feeling: being looked after, being known, knowing there was always another woman around
who would step in. The black-and-white treatment brings that feeling to the surface, giving
the film the texture of memory and letting the emotion in the faces, hands, and gestures do
the talking.
Infacare Kid 4 sits inside this world rather than interrupting it, part of the everyday act of
caring alongside everything else these women do to help a child grow.
Because this village doesn't belong to one woman, neither does the film. Each vignette gives
us another mother, another relationship, another memory, building a portrait of something
bigger than motherhood as biology: the mothers we may not share a surname with, but who
helped shape who we became.
