The campaign “Vermy Jou Land” raises awareness of the challenges Gen Z South Africans face when it comes to voting by drawing parallels between political disengagement and the avoidant behaviours common in modern youth culture.

Rather than portraying young people as lazy or apathetic, the campaign recognises that many Gen Z South Africans feel disconnected from politics after growing up surrounded by corruption, broken promises, and systems that often seem unwilling to listen. As a result, voting can feel uncomfortable, pointless, or emotionally exhausting.

The campaign uses irony, sarcasm, and gaslighting-style messaging to mirror familiar behaviours such as ghosting, avoidance, and emotional withdrawal. By presenting serious societal issues in an exaggeratedly positive way and pretending that everything is fine, the campaign encourages audiences to confront the consequences of their silence. Messages that dismiss real problems or suggest simply ignoring them reflect the same avoidance many young people use when dealing with difficult conversations in their personal lives. This allows audiences to recognise their own behaviours within the campaign.

“Vermy Jou Land” is therefore more than a conventional voting campaign; it is a cultural critique of avoidance. It highlights that ignoring politics does not remove its impact from everyday life, and that choosing not to participate is still a decision with consequences.
