HATA GBV / TRAP OP GBV

Description (View/Hide)
i-LEAD Self Defense is a brand that has the purpose to transform women from being fearful and vulnerable to confident and equipped with the skills and knowledge through training and workshops to provide a solution to the national crisis of GBV in our country. The Hata GBV campaign disrupts traditional approaches to gender-based violence awareness by turning everyday campus spaces into powerful platforms for reflection and action. Through interactive activations like stairway messages and visual storytelling, it confronts harmful phrases and behaviours, empowering students to recognize, reject, and speak out against GBV. We chose to focus on #HATAGBV and i-LEAD Self Defense because their work directly responds to one of South Africa’s most urgent social issues: gender-based violence (GBV). i-LEAD is particularly relevant because it provides free self-defence services and training for women, helping equip individuals with practical skills that may protect them in potentially dangerous situations. In a country where GBV remains a serious concern, awareness alone is not enough. It is important to educate, empower and equip people with practical knowledge and skills that they may need in the future. The Hata GBV campaign addresses the urgent need to challenge and change harmful gender norms on campus. By using everyday spaces as interactive platforms, the campaign makes the issue visible, relatable, and actionable. It empowers students to recognize abuse and take action fostering a safer and more supportive campus community.
