Description (View/Hide)
Toughees Taal: “Hamba Naye” (Go With Them)

Toughees Taal: “Hamba Naye” (Go With Them) is an ambient campaign about reconnecting township fathers and sons through the language they share. It uses Tsotsitaal, the ever-evolving language of the streets, as a cultural bridge between generations.

Rather than simply telling fathers to be more present, the campaign turns everyday touchpoints into quiet reminders of connection, guidance and legacy.

At the heart of the campaign is the Toughees Taal shoe. Fathers select a personal message in their own street tongue, which is hot-foil stamped in gold onto the inside tongue of the shoe. Hidden from everyone else, the message becomes something a son carries with him every day. “NQOBA AMAPHUPHO AKHO” becomes more than a phrase; it becomes a father's voice walking alongside him.

This idea extends into Die Taalbox, where the physical unboxing becomes an intergenerational exchange. Alongside the shoes is a handwritten iLetter containing personal advice, pride and encouragement, wrapped in tissue paper printed with a dictionary of local slang. The packaging transforms language into something tactile, personal and worth keeping.

The campaign also brings Tsotsitaal into the physical world through ambient messaging, allowing familiar words and phrases to appear in unexpected places and spark moments of recognition between fathers, sons and their communities.

Toughees Taal makes language tangible. Every word becomes something you can discover, carry and pass on, creating a quiet reminder that a father's guidance can go with you, wherever you go.
