Entry Title
Toughees Taal

Description (View/Hide)
Toughees Taal: “Hamba Naye” (Go With Them) addresses a social challenge faced by young township boys (iNtwana ezi baie zasekasi) who may lack positive fatherly mentorship and connection, leaving them vulnerable to seeking belonging within street or gang culture.

The campaign uses Tsotsitaal, an urban street language rooted in township culture, as a bridge between generations. By bringing tyma’s (fathers) and lyties (sons) together through language, Toughees Taal creates a meaningful way for fathers to pass down guidance, cultural identity and legacy.

Campaign Elements

Mabona K’qala | Digital Engagement
Instagram acts as the initial hook, using emotive messaging such as “Dad, I don’t know you... but I want to” to spark curiosity and encourage fathers to engage with the campaign.

Digital Pozi | The Digital Hub
The campaign website allows fathers to purchase limited-edition back-to-school Toughees, write a personalised letter in their own street tongue, and select a motivational phrase to be stamped onto the shoes.

Liyashis’ Ibathu | Hot-Foil Stamping
Words of encouragement are hot-foil stamped in gold onto the inside tongue of each shoe, transforming an everyday object into a physical reminder of paternal support. Phrases such as “NQOBA AMAPHUPHO AKHO” become messages their sons carry with them wherever they go.

Die Taalbox | The Packaging
The shoes arrive in custom packaging containing a handwritten iLetter filled with pride, guidance and encouragement. A tissue-paper dictionary explains local slang expressions, turning the unboxing into an intergenerational language exchange.

Through Toughees Taal, language becomes more than communication. It becomes a way for fathers and sons to reconnect, share culture and carry each other forward.
