Description (View/Hide)
Bodil en die Beer is a fully illustrated Afrikaans retelling of the Scandinavian fairy tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," translated and illustrated as a complete picture book. The project demonstrates command of long-form narrative illustration, sustaining a cohesive visual world across a full story arc, curse, courtship, betrayal, quest, and redemption.
A restrained blue-and-cream palette, ornate folk-art border patterns reminiscent of Delft tilework, and soft watercolour-and-gouache rendering unify the book's visual identity from cover to final spread. Illustrated verse, the witch's curse, rendered in decorative framed text, sits alongside narrative prose spreads, showing versatility in pacing text and image together.
Character illustration carries much of the story's emotional weight: Bodil framed pensively in a windowsill dreaming of a world beyond her means; the bear-prince Kyrre rendered with tenderness in both his enchanted and true forms; and quieter visual beats, a lit candle, dripping wax, a startled awakening, used to stage the story's pivotal betrayal without a single word of dialogue. Later spreads shift tone with warmth and urgency: a hidden witch disguised as a mother, a barefoot journey to a griffin transformation, and a tearful garden reunion with a heartbroken princess.
The book closes on a quiet, ornamented illustration of the couple's reunion, paired with a decorative line-art rendering of their castle, echoing the tilework borders introduced on the opening spread and bringing the visual narrative full circle.
Translating both the language and the illustrative tradition of a Northern European fairy tale into Afrikaans, the project showcases sustained narrative illustration craft, a controlled and evocative colour and pattern language, and strong sequential storytelling across a full-length children's book.
