Description (View/Hide)
This project functions as both portfolio and a pitch: a tongue-in-cheek piece of self-branding that simultaneously proves the illustrator's range across editorial cover design, character illustration, product design, and brand collateral, all while making the case, quite literally, for the value of "100% human" creative work in an industry saturated with AI.
This project reimagines the illustrator as the product, packaging their own creative practice as a collectible "action figure.” Framed within this concept is a full body of illustrative and design work spanning multiple hypothetical publishing projects, showcasing genuine range across style, audience, and medium:
"Verdwyn": a science-fiction concept novel for a middle-grade audience, its cover anchored by a striking ensemble of characters: a cyborg protagonist with an intricately detailed mechanical half-face, a brooding young lead, and two vividly styled supporting characters, all set against a glowing nebula and ringed planet. The palette and character design lean into a bold, saturated sci-fi aesthetic that reads instantly as adventure fiction for younger readers.
"Tafel vir Twee": a romance novel rendered as a warm, string-lit seaside fish-and-chips shop front at dusk, its neon-style fish-shaped sign anchoring the title. The illustration's soft evening palette, plant-filled balconies, and cosy picnic tables build an inviting, intimate mood suited to its genre, tagged "Beste Afrikaans Romanse."
Extending "Tafel vir Twee" into physical collateral, a set of fish & chips-themed bookmarks carries the novel's food motif into a bold, graphic illustration style, playful character-driven fish designs wrapped in newspaper parcels, paired with a matching checkerboard variant. A set of "Knopie Spelde" (button pins) extends both titles into wearable collectibles: whimsical alien sea-creatures and spacecraft for "Verdwyn," each rendered as a self-contained starry-sky illustration suited to a small circular format. A separate character property, "Karla Kat Maak 'n Rok" ("Karla Kat Makes a Dress"), rounds out the collateral suite
