Die Stadsmuis en die Plaasmuis

Description (View/Hide)
This illustration project offers a fresh, richly imagined retelling of one of Aesop's most enduring fables, 'The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse', bringing timeless moral storytelling to a new generation of readers through visual narrative.

The work traces the fable's classic arc: the humble, content Country Mouse, uprooted from his simple life of fresh grains and starlit sleep by his cousin's promise of luxury, is drawn into the glittering, precarious world of the city, a banquet of cheese, honeyed spoons, and candlelit indulgence that quickly turns to danger with the arrival of a thundering butler and a prowling cat. Through this journey, the illustrations chart a vivid contrast between two ways of living: the quiet abundance of rural simplicity versus the seductive, high-stakes excess of the city, building toward the fable's enduring moral — that peace and freedom are worth more than luxury bought with fear.

The project's illustrative choices lean into this tension visually, contrasting the Country Mouse's earthy, sun-dappled world with the shadowed, candlelit opulence of the townhouse interior, before erupting into the frantic, high-contrast chaos of the cat's attack. This shift in visual tone across the narrative mirrors the emotional arc of the story itself, guiding the reader from comfort, to temptation, to fear, and finally back to a hard-won sense of peace.

By adapting a public-domain fable through original character design and scene illustration, the project demonstrates strong sequential storytelling craft, pacing tension, humour, and moral resonance across a full narrative arc, while keeping faith with the fable's centuries-old lesson on the true cost of chasing more than one needs.
