Die Draak en die Pêrel

Description (View/Hide)
'Die Draak en die Pêrel' is a visual reimagining of a traditional Chinese folk tale, exploring the enduring power of storytelling, generosity and transformation. Through richly illustrated scenes, the project transports the viewer into a mythical landscape of mist-covered mountains, drought-stricken villages and magical creatures, bringing an ancient legend to life for a contemporary audience.

At the centre of the story is a magical pearl, a symbol of abundance, healing and power. Whether discovered by a struggling young boy or protected by a benevolent dragon, its true purpose remains the same: power is not measured by what we possess, but by what we choose to give.

The narrative explores the tension between generosity and greed, following the journey from desperation and scarcity to sacrifice, transformation and renewal. The dragon becomes more than a mythical creature; he represents the selfless protector who gives of himself to restore life to a suffering community.

Visually, the project draws inspiration from the atmosphere, symbolism and visual language associated with traditional Chinese folklore, while using contemporary illustration to create an accessible and immersive interpretation. The interplay between dramatic landscapes, mythical characters and moments of quiet human emotion allows the story to unfold as both a narrative and a visual experience.

Die Draak en die Pêrel ultimately celebrates the universality of folk tales, stories that travel across generations and cultures because their central truths remain relevant. At its heart, this is a story about what we leave behind when we choose generosity over greed, community over self-interest, and sacrifice over possession.
