Entry Title
Stoep Stoeltjie

Description (View/Hide)
Brief
The South African Tourism Board commissioned a hand-illustrated visual identity for any of the given areas, showcasing a positive promotional aspect of the area. The visual identity includes an illustrated typeface, visual identity with a logo as well as a physical crafted item.

Problem
According to research by Mvibi (2022), communities like Salt River are defined by their social networks. Unfortunately, these residents are often overlooked and are being torn apart due to gentrification and the forced removals of residents in the area.

Observation
In Salt River, it was observed that communities were strengthened by kuiering* on their stoeps.

Insight
Whether they are sitting, standing or talking, the use of the chair eases this form of connection, cementing social systems within communities which allows traditions to form through social interaction and facilitates the inheritance of a place in the community for generations.

Therefore, it can be said that communities validate existence.

Solution
Stoep Stoeltjie* is a campaign with a hand-crafted typeface using paper crafting techniques designed to celebrate the intimate social lives of the residents of Salt River that are so often overlooked. Inspired by the actual chairs found in the neighbourhood, the typeface reflects the benefits that come from socialising, allowing communities to form organically, connecting with one another, deepening their roots in the area and allowing for the formation of unique identities to thrive. The campaign consists of a hand-appliqued pillowcase, a collage pack to make your own stoep stoeltjie and an Instagram page that allows people of the community to share what they spoke about on their own stoepe*.

* kuiering - visiting
*stoep stoeltjie - veranda chair
*stoepe - plural veranda
