Description (View/Hide)
Many people unfamiliar with isiXhosa perceive its click consonants as harsh or intimidating simply because they lack context. Yet these same people instinctively associate the sounds of a Coca-Cola bottle opening, a can clicking or glasses clinking with refreshment, celebration and togetherness.

XOKE bridges this contradiction by using everyday Coca-Cola sounds to reframe the way audiences hear isiXhosa. Installed in high-footfall public environments, the campaign transformed familiar brand sound cues into playful linguistic moments, revealing that clicks are not abrasive noises, but natural rhythms embedded in everyday life and shared human experiences.

Outdoor media became more than a visual surface. It became a stage for spontaneous discovery. By interrupting routine journeys with recognisable sounds and unexpected language connections, the campaign encouraged passers-by to reconsider long-held assumptions in the very spaces where diverse communities naturally intersect.

Rather than teaching pronunciation through instruction, XOKE created moments of curiosity. Humour and recognition became the entry point, while Coca-Cola's long-standing association with bringing people together positioned the brand as a cultural connector rather than merely a beverage.

The campaign demonstrates how out-of-home media can do more than communicate a message. It can reshape perception in real time, transforming a misunderstood language feature into a symbol of connection, belonging and shared South African identity… one XOKE click at a time 😊
