Description (View/Hide)
Folded Tongues - Let Language Take Shape
Problem:
For this brief, we were tasked by the Western Cape Department of Economic Development of Tourism to create a visual identity for the cape town suburb of Salt River. This would be in the form of a hand-crafted typeface. Deliverables required were an alphabet, type specimen, Logo and applicable merchandise.
Insight:
Within the Muslim community of Salt River, there is a notable divide that traces back to 1914 at the area's first mosque. This split of Salt River's first mosque (Tennyson Street Masjied) was triggered by disagreements over leadership and doctrinal practice, specifically Sufi Thikr (remembrance rituals). This resulted in the establishment of the Nur-ul Islam Mosque (Addison Road) by the breakaway faction, instantly creating two major, distinct religious anchors in the neighbourhood whose separate identities persist to this day. The existence of these two major mosques in such close proximity solidified Salt River as an anchor for the Muslim community.
Solution
The Folded Tongues" is a 3D papercrafted alphabet. This alphabet serves as the centrepiece of the project. It combines Latin script (English/Afrikaans) with transliterated Arabic (reflecting the use of Arabic Afrikaans or Cape Malay religious texts). The papercraft medium symbolises the layering and folding identities within the community.
