Doll 67 rationale:
Women on Farms Project (WFP) wants to bring light the profound impact harmful pesticides have on farmworkers. The frighting reality is that there are 67 highly hazardous pesticides that are banned in the European Union, but not in South Africa.
In 2022, SA’s Department of Health and Agriculture gave notice that these certain harmful pesticides will be phased out and completely banned by 1 June 2024. In January 2024, WFP will organize a friendly march to Parliament, to remind Departments of their promise to pull through on the ban. This reminder march will be centred around Doll 67, a poignant representation of every farmworker affected by these pesticides. The main areas effected by pesticides, being the lungs, stomach, hands, and arms will be sown onto Doll 67. A pinning ceremony will commence where every woman will write their story on a pin and place it into the areas where pesticides have harmed them.
This visual demonstration, along with a legal petition, serve as a powerful reminder to Department that the lives, health and safety of farmworkers are in their hands and that the promise to #BanThe67HarmfulPestidies should not be forgotten.
