BET (Black Entertainment Television) Africa on DStv Channel 129, is a television channel where black is celebrated, where Black excellence shines and where black culture lives. Launched in Africa in 2015, BET in Africa is part of the diverse multimedia entertainment portfolio of Paramount Africa. Celebrating African and African-American culture. Mduduzi Thembinkosi Edmund Tshabalala, also known as "Mandoza", was a South African singer-songwriter and Kwaito recording artist who pioneered the Kwaito music genre. His hit single, "Nkalakatha", became a crossover hit and reached the top of the charts on both traditionally black and white radio stations in South Africa. To celebrate his life story BET paid tribute to Mandoza by producing an original Bio Epic about his life. We were briefed to create the main opening titles for the bio epic using motion design. To set the tone for NKALAKATHA - The life of Mandoza, our main title treatment aimed to capture the essence of 90's popular culture in South Africa. Inspired by retro street culture design aesthetics blended with urban South African art, the visual design style of the opening sequence echo's the time period of the rise of Kwaito music in SA, evoking nostalgia to audiences that are fans of Mandoza & the Kwaito music scene. Using motion design to capture the audiences imagination, our main title sequence paid respect to the king of Kwaito.
